My view is a little different.
I would say that probably a great deal has been done
and will continue to be done.
My analogy for CARDICIS is a "fifth column" in the
sense of underground rather than treacherous. One of
its main achievements is continuing to exist. The
activities do not necessarily receive any fanfare. As
in a hymn I learned as a child:
"In this world of darkness, so may we shine,
You in your small corner, and I in mine."
I know about Karole and Gens de la Caraibe, where
Cardicis is very definitely alive. I heard Gregor,
just the other night, advocating Cardicis to a young
St Lucian currently working in communications in
I listened in Aruba when the members of ACURIL
(Association of Caribbean University, Research and
Institutional Libraries) agreed with Daniel about the
desirability of a "Cardicis approach" in information
networking in the Caribbean.
Roberto Mori was instrumental in an invitation to
Cardicis to have a presence at IV Congreso de Política
Pública para Asuntos Comunitarios Redes y alianzas:
Tejiendo solidaridad en un mundo global in Puerto Rico
at the end of September, where there was the same
recognition of a need to reach out towards the rest of
the Caribbean, that English can come from the mouth of
a friend, a brother (or in this case a sister)
I am delinquent over reporting this meeting (report
written, but not tidied up to be sent - now a new year
resolution for completion :-)) My excuse is 3
conference papers this autumn as well as my regular
teaching. Two came at very short notice - the
"Alliance of Civilisations" funded by the Government
of Spain, held in St Lucia, the second the CANQATE
Caribbean Area Network for Quality Assurance in
Tertiary Education, also held in St Lucia. What did I
talk about? Cardicis and the methods and ideas of
I know that Roberto has been very active about
spreading the word in Puerto Rico - because of that
the word has spread out to Guatemala and Costa Rica
and to a new contact in Haiti
Would you each accept a challenge to "throw into the
pot" your Cardicis offerings and actions for 2006?
Daniel is very good at cooking bouillabaise - let's
give him some ingredients :-)
Hugs and best wishes for 2007 from St Lucia
